Kashmir
1. Jammu and Kashmir is a state in Northern India, granted autonomy under article 370 of Indian constitution.It is located mostly in the Himalayan mountains and shares a border with the states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to the south. Jammu and Kashmir has an international border with China in the north and east, and the Line of Control separates it from the Pakistani controlled territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan in the west and northwest respectively.Formerly a part of the erstwhile Princely State of Kashmir and Jammu, which governed the larger historic region of Kashmir, the region is the subject of a territorial conflict among China, India and Pakistan. Pakistan, which claims the territory as disputed,refers to it alternatively as Indian occupied Kashmir or Indian held Kashmir, whereas some international agencies such as the United Nations, call it Indian administered Kashmir.The regions under the control of Pakistan are referred to as Pakistan occupied Kashmir within India, as Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan, and as Pakistan administered Kashmir or Pakistan controlled Kashmir generally. .....
Ladakh
2. Ladakh is a mountainous region in the disputed northwest Jammu and Kashmir area in north India and in the area known as the Trans Himalaya, (the lands beyond the Himalaya Tibet, Xinjiang and northern Pakistan). It is slightly smaller than Scotland, the settled population live between 2700m and 4500m, and nomadic encampments even higher, and it is the largest and the least populated region of Jammu and Kashmir. The people are a mixture of Buddhist and Muslim 50% of each. Buddhists are the majority in the east close to the Chinese border and a slight majority overall while Muslims have the majority in the north and west. Travellers are likely to see more of the Buddhists as the majority of the tourist attractions are in the east and directly related to Tibetan Buddhist culture. .....
Sonamarg
3. Located on the Srinagar Ladakh Highway, around two and a half hours drive northeast of Srinagar, scenic Sonamarg (Meadow of Gold) is famous for its Thajiwas Glacier. What is remarkable about this glacier is how accessible it is. From the highway, you can hike up to the glacier and back in around five hours. If you do not have so much time to spare, it is possible to ride a pony instead, or take a taxi part of the way there and walk. It is costly though. Pony owners will charge at least 600 rupees per person for a return trip. Do bargain hard. Scenes of many Bollywood movies have been filmed in the area, and you wo not have to try very hard to feel like youare in one! There are a number of options for eating and staying at Sonamarg. Ahsan Mount Resort has fabulous Swiss tents for glamping. Hotel Snowland is conveniently located but could be managed better. .....
Gulmarg
4. Gulmarg (Meadow of Flowers), India is version of a ski resort, is situated less than two hours drive east of Srinagar. The season runs from mid December to mid March. If youare not into skiing, you may still want to let the gondola whisk you more than 13,000 feet up Mount Apharwat for outstanding views. Apparently, it is the world is highest cable car. And, it is very popular, so you should buy your tickets online to avoid a long queues. Unfortunately, you will still have to wait to board it though. Ubiquitous pony rides are also available in Gulmarg, and their owners are particularly aggressive in pestering tourists for business. Pahalgam
5. Pahalgam, the Valley of Shepherds, is around three hours drive from Srinagar and is near the departure point for pilgrims going on the Amarnath Yatra (avoid visiting during July as it will be very busy then). Visitors commonly head to Pahalgam is Betaab Valley (the Bollywood movie Betaab was shot there), with its fresh flowing Lidder River and surrounding snow capped hills. However, what you need to be aware of, is that you will only be allowed to take your vehicle up to a certain point to reach the Valley. After that, you will need to hire a prepaid vehicle provided by the local transport association, or walk. Entrance to the Valley is regulated and costs 10 rupees. Other possible activities around Pahalgam include golfing, trout fishing, and river rafting. It is a popular destination for adventure tourism. .....
Sinthan Top
6. Sinthan Top is becoming a sought after alternative to the other, often crowded, tourist places in Kashmir. Interest in it has grown since construction of the Kokernag Sinthan Top Kishtwar Road, connecting Kashmir with Jammu, began. It is yet to be developed though, so there is an absence of facilities for tourists. Hence, it is a good idea to stop in Daksum on the way. The drive from Srinagar to Sinthan Top takes around two and a half hours. It is possible to stay in Daksum, or Kokernag where there are more options. These are excellent places to go trekking and exploring the great outdoors. .....
Dal Lake
7. Dal lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in India, is the second largest lake of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Encircled by mountains on three sides, the banks of this lake are adorned by several blooming gardens and orchards. Dal Lake has rightfully become an icon of the Kashmir tourism industry. A Himalayan urban lake, it has five basins and a number of channels that are well linked with each other. There are plenty of fishes in Dal Lake and fishery is the second largest industry of the region centered on the lake. The sparkling quiet waters of Dal surrounded by snow capped mountains on its three sides, undoubtedly mark it as one of the most beautiful lakes of India. It is also the second largest lake in the State of Jammu and Kashmir with numerous gardens and orchards all along its shores. 9. Emperor Jehangir got the Shalimar Garden built for his wife Nur Jahan in 1616. A second garden Faiz Baksh, was added to it later during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (1628 1658). Covering an area of approximately 539 m by 182 m, the Shalimar garden offer an amazing view over the other gardens, lakes and shallow terraces. Also known as the garden of love, the Shalimar Mughal Gardens has four terraces, rising one above the other. The fourth terrace of the garden was, at one point of time, reserved for royal ladies. There is also a canal lined with polished stones running through the center of the Shalimar Bagh. The canal is responsible for supplying water to the garden from Harwan.The top terrace of the Shalimar garden was reserved for the Mughal Emperor and the royal ladies of the court. In fact, the top terrace was the most wonderful one out of all the terraces. The terrace has a tank with a black stone pavilion in its middle. The pavilion, which once served as a banquet hall, is supported by fluted pillars made up of black marble. Other attractions of the Shalimar Bagh of Kashmir include a number of fountains, shaded trees and innumerable varieties of flowers that blossom in spring and autumn. Last but not the least, a light and sound show organized in the garden every evening, during the period of May to October, is simply superb. .....
Betab Valley

Betab valley has earned its name from the popular Bollywood film Betab which was the debut film for the actress Amrita Singh and actor Sunny Deol. Betab valley is located fifteen km from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. Betab valley falls on the way to the popular cave temple Amarnath between Chandanwari and Pahalgam.The picturesque location of Betab valley contains numerous lakes, green grazing lands, snow covered mountains and thick vegetation. .....

Nishat Garden
11. Nishat Garden, located on the banks of the beautiful Dal Lake, is one of the largest Mughal gardens. Known as the garden of bliss, this garden was designed in 1633 AD by the brother of Nur Jahan, Asaf Khan. Nishat Bagh as laid out now is a broad cascade of terraces lined with avenues of chinar and cypress trees, which starts from the lakeshore and reaches up to an artificial facade at the hill end. Rising from the edge of the Dal Lake, it has twelve 12 terraces representing twelve Zodiacal signs. However, it has only two sections, namely the public garden and the private garden for the Zanana or harem vis a vis the four sections of the Shalimar Bagh this difference is attributed to the fact that the latter Bagh catered to the Mughal Emperor, while Nishad Bagh belonged to a man of his court, a noble. There are, however, some similarities with the Shalimar Bagh, such as the polished stone channel and terraces. The source of water supply to the two gardens is the same. Built in an east-west direction, the top terrace has the Zenana garden while the lowest terrace is connected to the Dal Lake. In recent years, the lowest terrace has merged with the approach road. A spring called the Gopi Thirst provides clear water supply to the gardens. There are a few old Mughal period buildings in the vicinity of the Bagh. .....
Chashmashahi
12. Chashma Shahi has tastefully laid garden in terraces, which commands a magnificent view of the Dal Lake below and surrounding mountain ranges. The cool water of the spring is highly refreshing and digestive. The original garden was laid out by Shah Jehan in 1632 AD.By the side of Chashma Shahi Garden are huts where some of the state government officials have their official residences to enjoy the luxurious stay while serving the Jammu & Kashmir State Government.Meaning Royal Spring, this garden is located above the Nehru Memorial Park. Yousmarg
13. Yusmarg has a great scope for adventure tourism. Doodganga a river flows through this meadow. In its vicinity lies the alpine meadow of Tosa Maidan. A trek of 4 km leads to a small Lake named as Nilnag surrounded by pine trees. Another 10 km trek leads to the most interesting lake the frozen lake in Sang e Safed valley, most portion of this lake is covered by ice even during the summer. A number of tourist huts, restaurants and hotels are available for lodging. The other activities include horse riding, fishing, skiing during winter and photography. .....
Chemrey Monastery
14. Chemrey Monastery Ladakh was founded during 17th century and it is just 40km from Ladakh. Chemrey Gompa belongs to the Drugpa monastic order and was found by the Lama Tagsang Raschen and dedicated to King Sengge Namgyal. There are only 20 monks of Drugpa community residing in this monastery. Drugpa monastery was made in memory of king Sengge Namgyal. There are numerous shrines that are located in this monastery.The major attraction of Chemrey Gompa is the statue of Padmasambhava which is one story high.Chemrey monastery Ladakh also include valuable collection of scriptures.The consecutive reincarnation of Lama Tagsang Raschen have being helping as the incumbent of the chemrey monastery, since quite a long time.Chemrey Monastery contains one main assembly hall of this monastery that lies on the right side of the central courtyard and holds two images of the founder of Chemrey, Stagtshang Raspa, in his 4th and 5th incarnations. Murals of Sakyamuni (Historical Buddha) along with his two chief followers occupy the wall right behind the image of Stagtshang Raspa. Also seen in the dukhang are the paintings of two large mandalas Kalachakra and Akshobhya (the Imperturbable Buddha or the Buddha of the East) as well as twenty nine volumes of the Buddhist scriptures. Nagin Lake
15. Known as the Jewel In The Ring, Nagin is generally held to be the most beautiful of the Dal lakes. Its name comes from the many trees, which encircle the small, deep blue lake. Nagin is only separated from the Larer Dal lakes by a narrow causeway and it also has a number of houseboats moored around its perimeter.If one wants to really get away from the chaotic city life all then Nagin is a good place to find a house boat and do it the surroundings are much more serene and isolated than on Dal Lake. One can rent rowboats from the camping site here either to simply row around the lake or to look around for a houseboat. .....
Shankaracharya Temple
16. The Shankaracharya Temple, also known as the Jyesteshwara temple or Pas Pahar by Buddhists, is situated in the Zabarwan Mountain in Srinagar, Kashmir. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is on the summit of the same name at a height of 1,000 feet (300 m) above the plain and overlooks the city of Srinagar.The Jyoteshware temple rests on a solid rock. A 20 foot tall octagonal base supports a square building on top. The terrace around the square temple is reached by a stone staircase enclosed between two walls. .....
Shankaracharya Hill
17. Thickly forested Shankaracharya Hill is topped by a small Shiva temple built from hefty blocks of visibly ancient grey stone. Previously known as Takht i Sulaiman (Throne of Solomon), it now named for a sage who reached enlightenment here in AD 750, but signs date the octagonal structure as 5th century and the site is even older. Some claim, controversially, that a previous temple here was once renovated by Jesus and St Thomas. Access is by a winding 5.5km road from Nehru Park.Walking is considered ill advised given the population of wild bears. From road end the temple is five minutes up a stairway from a police checkpoint where you must leave phones and cameras before reaching the panoramic views of Srinagar and Dal Lake. .....
Shiv Khori
18. Shivkhori is a famous cave shrine of Hindus devoted to lord Shiva, situated in district Udhampur of Jammu and Kashmir state in India. In Udhampur district, there are many shrines such as Mata Vaishno Devi, Sudhmahadev, Pingla Mata, Mahamaya Chountra Mata, Merhada Mata, Baba Dhandar, Siad Baba. Shiv Khori is one of them located in village Ransoo of Pouni block in tehsil Reasi of the Udhampur district, which attracts lakhs of devotees in a year. Shiv Khori is situated in between the hillocks about 140 km north of Jammu, 120 km from Udhampur and 80 km from Katra. Buses and light vehicles go up to Ransoo, the base camp of pilgrimage surrounded by lush green mountains. People have to traverse about 3 km track on foot which is recently being constructed by the Shiv Khori Shrine Board, Ransoo duly headed by the District Development Commissioner, Udhampur as chairman and Sub Divisional Magistrate, Reasi as Member Secretary. .....
Mosque Jama Masjid
19. Jamia Masjid is a mosque in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, India. The Jamia Masjid of Srinagar is situated at Nowhatta, in the middle of the old city. An important mosque was built by Sultan Sikandar in 1400 AD.under the order by mir mohmmad hamadani son of Shah hamdan ,shah hamdan already prays namaz in side and stay there Later, the son of Sultan Sikandar, Zain ul Abidin got the mosque extended. The attractions of the Jamia Masjid of Srinagar, Kashmir include beautiful Indo Saracenic architecture, a magnificent courtyard and 370 wooden pillars. Drass
20. The town of Dras is located in a relatively flat and open space. It has extensive willow groves along the river. Insummer this town presents a pleasant look while in winter it discovered under a thick blanket of snow. Dras experiences the lowest temperatures in the valley and with its altitude of 3,300 m, this town is said to be the second coldest inhabited place in Asia. The mercury may drop to as low as 40 degrees Celcius below freezing point. Often the small huts are covered by snow and communication with the outside world is cut off.The Dras Valley is an enchanting valley formed by the Dras River which rises in the Machoi glacier near the famous Zozila Pass. Kheer Bhavani Temple
21. The temple of Kheer Bhawani is situated at a distance of 14 miles east of Srinagar against the background of natural sight near the village of Tula Mula. This temple, is located in the middle of a spring, around which there is a vast area whose floor has been covered with smooth and beautiful stones. In it exist large and old chinar trees beneath which the pilgrims sit or sleep on mats of grass. The colour of the spring goes on changing. While most of the colours do not have any particular significance, the colour black is taken as an indication for inauspicious times for Kashmir. .....
Martand Sun Temple
22. Martand Sun Temple, constructed in the medieval era during the period from the 7th to the 8th century AD, is dedicated to the Hindu sun god, Surya. Lalitaditya, one of the kings of the Surya dynasty, built this temple at the top of a plateau in proximity to a small town named Anantnag. It is considered to be one of the finest works of King Lalitaditya with its 84 columns placed at regular intervals. Square lime stone bricks were used in the construction of this temple showcasing the skills of the artisans of the place at that time.The majestic architecture of the temple makes it one of a kind. Charar I Sharief
23. Charar i Sharif, located at a distance of about 28 km from Srinagar is popularly known as Hazrat Sheikh Noor ud Din Wali. It was built in honour of the Muslim Sufi Saint Hazrat Sheikh Noor ud Din Wali, more than 600 years ago. Hazrat Sheikh Noor ud Din Wali was born in 1377 to a woman called Salar Sanz and was known in the earlier part of his life as Nund Reshi or Sahazanand. It is said that just three days after his birth, Hazrat Sheikh refused to drink his mother is milk. He later accepted the milk of a female saint or yogini known as Lal Ded who subsequently declared him her spiritual heir.He was the first person to introduce Rishism in the valley. He preached non violence, vegetarianism, tolerance, and communal harmony. His followers knew him by different names such as Alamdar e Kashmir, Sheikh ul Alam, Sarkhel e Rishiya, and Sheikh Noor ud Din Noorani. Hazrat Sheikh also made several contributions in the field of philosophy and poetry. When he died in 1438, around nine lac followers assembled at this shrine within two days. His remains were buried at the Charar i Sharif. This shrine has been destroyed many times since, but it still holds great religious significance. .....
Hazratbal Mosque

This is Dargah Hazratbal Mosque.The holy hair of beloved Prophet(SAW) is housed here.It was brought from Madina Tayyibah,by Sayyid Abdullah,to India,in the reign of mughal emperor shah jahan.Later on, during the reign of Aurangzeb Alamgir,Sayyid Abdullah,gifted it to his Kashmiri disciple and friend,Hazrat Isawari,who was in delhi,in connection with his business.Before Ishawari could bring the holy relic to Kashmir,He died on his trip and the relic was brought to kashmir,by his aid,alongwith the the mortal remains of Ishawar,under the patronage of royal guard,which Aurangzeb Alamgir provided,after confirming the authenticity of the holy hair.On arrving in Kashmir it was housed in Nakshband Sahib mosque,but keeping in view the huge number of visitors,the relic was,immediately, shifted to present day Hazratbal Mosque.Hazrat Ishawari was buried in the compound of Hazratbal mosque and the holy relic housed in the buliding,that had been built by Shah Jahan,few years ago.The present structure,made of marble and a replica of Green Dome of Madina Tayyibah,was built in 1980 is,when Sheikh Abdullah was the chief minister of the state.Hazratbal mosque, is also known as,MADINATUS SANIby kashmiris,meaning..Second Madina Tayyibah,by qayoom ul hassan shah.. .....
Dachigam National Park
25. Located very close to Srinagar (22 km), Dachigam National Park with its splendid forests and magnificent scenery is easily accessible. Of all the many sanctuaries in the state, the one at Dachigam is the best known. At one time the exclusive hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Kashmir, it was declared a national park in 1951, and owing to a strictly enforced conservation programme, the Hangul population, once 150, now stands at over 400 animals. The two sectors of the Park Upper and Lower Dachigam are spread over an area of 141 sq km. and altitudes vary between 1,700 and 4,300 metres. Two steep ridges enclose the Park with its great topographical variety deep ravines, rocky outcrops, steep wooded slopes and rolling alpine pastures. Tumbling down from the Masrar Lake (4,300m), up in the high ranges, the Dachigam River winds through Lower Dachigam. .....
Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Botanical Gardens
26. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Botanical Garden was set up in 1969 and it was fully established in 1987. This garden has a dense temperate forest of Oak trees. This garden has a collection of well nursed and well maintained temperature trees and plants. It has a variety of different trees species of more than 50 breeds along with a wide range of plants and flowers. A greenhouse lies in the middle of the garden where you will be able to spot different types of Orchids.The botanical garden is home to more 1.5 lakh ornamental plants. Compared to Mughal Garden, this one is quiet and peaceful and it has a treasure of more than 300 breeds of Flora which includes cedar trees and willow trees. This is a well designed modern landscaped garden. Some hidden areas of garden have sidewalks made up of concrete along the side of the garden to encourage a stress free walk to nature lovers.

There is a stunning lake here that spreads over 17 hectares. There are paddle boats in the lake that help visitors enjoy the beauty of this lake and garden. This garden has a beautiful lake and it provides sights of a pleasurable water garden and charismatic waterfalls.For the pleasure of children, there is a small field with merry go round, swings and see saw games. This garden is a best place devoted to plant lovers and nature lovers.Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden is divided into four components by the name of sporting garden, research section garden, botanical garden and centre of plant introduction. Gulmarg Gondola
27. The Cable Car ride, popularly known as the Gondola Lift or Ride is the special attraction of Gulmarg. It is located at a distance of 1km in the west of the Gulmarg bus stand. The managing authority of the Gulmarg cable Car ride is the Jammu and Kashmir State Cable Car Corporations.There are two divisions of the ride one is from Gulmarg to Kongdoori and the second one is from Kongdoori to Apherwat. It starts from an elevation of 2690 m above sea level and go up to a height of 3090 m. It finally reaches Kongdoori by passing over the wonderful pine forests below.The tourists enjoying the cable car ride get thoroughly enthralled by experiencing the magnificent sight of the greenery of the hilly terrains and the picaresque setting all around. The cable ride also overtakes the marvelous meadow of colorful flowers called Khilanmarg during its journey. One of the most popular attractions of Gulmarg, an extremely famous resort in the world, is the Gulmarg Gondola. This is the single cable car system in the whole of Asia that can go up to an altitude of 13,500 feet above sea level.

The French company puma had designed the Gondola as a part of a technical cooperation, and the JKCCC or Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation is now in charge of its operation. Phase I and phase II are the two stages of its operation.Every single Gondola comes with a yellow colored small cabin with a capacity of 6 adult persons. The cabins of the Gondola Ride are suspended with the support of high strength cables that are constantly moving. It takes two stops and slows down for the purpose of boarding and disembarking of the riders. .....

Xuelian Feng
28. Xuelian Feng, Xuelian Peak or Snow Lotus Peak, is one of the major mountains of the Tian Shan mountain range. It lies in Xinjiang province, China, about 50 kilometres (30 mi) east northeast of Jengish Chokusu, the highest peak in the range. It is notable for its large, steep relief above the nearby valleys, and for its large topographic prominence. (It is ranked 84th in the world by this measure). The peak has two summits, with the main being the north summit at 6,627 m the south summit has an elevation of 6,527 m.The Tokai Section of the Japanese Alpine Club made four expeditions to Xuelian Feng, in 1986, 1988, 1989, and 1990, with the last being successful in ascending the main summit. (The 1989 expedition ascended the south summit and Junction Peak, another subpeak to the south of the main summit, with elevation 6,450 m, and came close to but did not reach the main summit.) In 1990, the expedition was led by Kazuo Tukushima, and ascended from the Karakume Glacier. The route ascended the southeast ridge of Junction Peak, then traversed a long (2 km/1.2 mi) corniced snow and rock ridge to reach the main summit tower. .....
Tulip garden

Tulip Garden in Kashmir is Asia is largest tulips garden and there is a likely hood that it can become the worlds second largest largest too.The tulip garden which is in Srinagar is commonly known as Siraj Bagh and is located no the banks of the famous Dal Lake. When viewing the garden you are able to see the large variety of colors of the flowers, and there are over 60 varieties of early, mid and late blooming tulips.The tourism authorities in the state said they are using the festival to promote the state as a preferred destination. ot of Indians go to Holland just to see tulips, but now this place is near and more affordable for the domestic tourists. We feel we will get more tourists. We have come to know that about 12,00 tourists and mostly outsiders have come here, said Tanveer Jahan, a secretary of tourism department. The garden at the foothills of Zabarwan overlooking the famed Dal Lake has about 60 varieties of multi colored tulips. 30. The 200 year old Rangdum Monastery is situated in the most isolated part of the Suru Valley in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
