Weird fish

SunFish
1. The sunfish is a very unique creature and one that you have probably never seen or heard of before unless youre particularly nerdy about your David Attenborough documentaries. Consider this: the sunfish is the heaviest bony fish in the world. This strange fish lives in tropical and temperate areas and it lives on a diet consisting mostly of jellyfish. It is also considered a delicacy among many Asian cultures, but the sale of sunfish flesh is forbidden in the European Union. .....
Frogfish
2. This unique fish definitely fits its name. It looks a cross between a fish and a frog? or at least a fish and another extremely ugly fish. These creatures have developed leg like fins that allow them to scurry across the ocean floor. They can also change colors if needed to blend into a coral reef and escape becoming some predators lunch. They also have a unique lure that comes out of the forehead and attracts their own dinner. Apparently this design has worked out well for it: the frogfish is not a single species; there are 45 different species of frogfish each with their own unique attributes. .....
Barreleye
3. Now this fish, perhaps more than all the others, looks like something you might see on another planet. And not one of those bogus Star Trek planets where things are pretty much the same except for pointy ears. The fish has a head that is made of very transparent scales and eyes that are almost always pointed upward and are protected by green orb-like lenses. Yes, it can look out through the top of its own head. This fish was found off the deep sea of Monterey California and was photographed alive for the first time in 2004. This fish is only six centimeters in diameter and the world has known of its existence since 1939 but it was only seen mangled in the nets of fishermen. .....
Chimaera
4. This fish may not have the strangest appearance on this list but it is still very strange and unique. Its also known as a ghostshark because the shark is its closest relative but it actually branched off from sharks more than 400 million years ago. That makes it pretty much a phylogenic orphan. One of the things that make chimeras different from sharks is that they have retractable sexual appendages on their forehead. Jealous? Though they have remained pretty much the same since the age of the dinosaurs, today their numbers are dwindling and they can now only be found in deep water. .....
JellyNose Fish
5. Conversely, there are few fish on this list that look as bizarre as this one. This fish is incredibly rare with only about dozen known jellynose species which means that sightings of this bizarre fish are incredibly rare. They are found off the coast of most continents at a depth of around 1,300 ? 2,300 feet. They can grow up to six feet long and they have mostly gelatinous bodies with very little muscle. .....
Leafy Sea Dragon
6. Despite its name this fish is not about to scare anyone. Rather, this little fella is truly beautiful and awe-inspiring even if it never grows more than a foot long. This fish is a relative of seahorses and gets its name from the fact that it has a number of appendages that, you guessed it, look like leaves. These appendages cause the leafy sea dragon to blend in with seaweed and it can even change its color to blend in. Leafy sea dragons eat shrimp and small fish that presumably never see them coming. .....
ViperFish
7. This is a fish that you would not like to come across because, whether or not it means you any harm, it is just terrifying to look at. This fish is very predatory and it actually uses a light producing organ on the end of its fin to attract its prey of small fish (and possibly ill placed toes). Then it uses its large teeth to immobilize its prey. These teeth are so large that the viperfish would be unable to close its mouth if it were not able to curve them behind its head. .....
Blobfish
8. This unique and somewhat disgusting looking fish is rarely seen by humans. The reason for this is that it lives at a depth where the pressure is several dozen times higher than the pressure at sea level. This makes it very difficult for humans to visit or even survive. The blob fish is basically a gelatinous mass with a density that is only slightly less than water. This gives in buoyancy that allows it to float just above the sea floor without expending energy to swim. .....
Hairy Angler
9. This fish was actually discovered by a documentary film crew working for the BBC to create The Blue Planet. It lives 3,300 feet below the surface of the ocean, which makes this fish appear invisible because it has red skin because the red light cannot penetrate that far below the surface. The male and female have a very unique relationship because the male becomes something of a parasite to the female. The male will attach itself to her flesh and gradually fuse with her bloodstream. .....
Paedocypris progenetica
10. The worlds smallest fish, and it lives in Indonesian swamp water so acidic scientists had thought it uninhabitable. It is only a matter of time before they start coming for us on land. This is by no means an all inclusive list of the bizarre fish that have been discovered and there is no telling what fish are waiting to be discovered far below the ocean depths... or in the swamp? or who knows where else. .....
The Land Catfish
11. The rarely seen and poorly studied order Phreatobius are said to be the only fish that live exclusively out of the water, slithering around in wet leaf litter along the banks of streams. Pink, slimy, worm-like and seemingly blind, its possible that these creatures spend most of their time deep beneath the soil. Everything else about them is completely unknown. .....
The Wolftrap Fish
12. The Thaumatichthyidae, or wolftrap anglerfish, may boast the most absurd overbites in the animal kingdom. Though the upper jaw is often several times larger than the lower one, it is also capable of folding in half lengthwise, forming a cage for the wolftrap fishs prey and allowing it to suck a meal down its throat. In every member of Thaumatichthyidae, a bioluminescent lure even dangles directly from the roof of the mouth.Like other deep-sea anglerfish, they have a parasitic mating ritual: the male fuses himself to the females flesh before shedding every extraneous body part. .....
The Whipnose Anglerfish
13. We already know how strange the deep-sea anglerfish can get, but members of the Gigantactinidae, or whipnose seadevils, stand out in two perplexing ways. First, their natural fishing lures grow to extraordinary lengths, sometimes more than 10 times that of the animals entire body. Stranger still, all living examples of these creatures have been observed swimming upside-down. Why? No one knows. .....
The Tube Eye
14. Also known as a thread-tail, Stylephorus chordatus is a rare deep-sea fish so unusual, the single species is alone in an entire taxonomic order. To put this in perspective, all the worlds cats, dogs, bears, raccoons, ferrets, and their relatives belong to one order, the Carnivora. Imagine if none of those existed except for one rare species of weasel in all the world, and you have a situation much like the tube-eyes. Despite its names, the strangest thing about this animal is probably its mouth. Except for one tiny, tubular opening, its jaws are fused together by an expandable bag of skin, functioning exactly like a set of bellows, or an accordian. By expanding the bag, it creates a powerful suction through that tiny, tubular opening to slurp up minute, planktonic crustaceans. This same maneuver also bugs out its eyeballs and twists them forward, like a set of binoculars, focusing in on its incredibly small prey. .....
Hogfish
15. Take a look at that snout! The hogfish is a colorful member of the wrasse family, possessing a protruded snout, ideal for searching out crustaceans buried in the ocean floor. Not only is it weird looking, it also is one of those rare animals that changes sex during its life cycle, beginning out as a female before turning into a male after three years or so. They are found predominantly around Florida and the south Atlantic, reaching lengths of three feet and weighing no more than 25 pounds. The hogfish above is the 21-pound, 15-ounce South Carolina state record. .....
Paddlefish
16. A paddlefish?s face and head is the stuff of nightmares, but don?t worry, despite their large mouths, they only feed on tiny zooplankton. Their elongated snout, known as a rostrum, can detect weak electrical fields, aiding them in their search for food. The American paddlefish is one of the largest freshwater fish in North America, capable of reaching five feet in length and weigh over 100 pounds. Found in many river systems across central U.S., the paddlefish is unique for gamefish as they are not taken by conventional rod-and-reel approach. Instead, bowfishing, spear, and snagging are the primary ways to catch a paddlefish. .....
Alligator Gar
17. This prehistoric-looking fish is a popular target for anglers, especially in south central U.S. They can grow over eight feet in length and weigh over 300 pounds, and put up an excellent fight, whether by rod-and-reel or by bowfishing. The alligator gar is so named because of their mouth, which resemble the elongated snout and teeth of the large reptile. Not only are they a worthy foe for anglers and bowfishers, they are a tough fish in general, as they can survive outside of water for upwards of two hours. Their flesh is considered a delicacy in the U.S. .....
Needlefish
18. The needlefish looks like a kind of gar, but they are an ocean-going fish that are typically smaller, rarely reaching a few feet in length. But don?t let its size fool you: if you were to think alligator gar has caused more deaths then a needlefish, you would be wrong. Needlefish can make jumps out of the water at speeds approaching 40 miles per hour, and if you?re standing in the wrong place and time, you could be accidentally speared by them. There have been two recorded deaths caused by needlefish, both as a result of a leaping needlefish ? one through the eye, and another through the heart. .....
Atlantic Scombrops
19. The Atlantic Scombrops commonly called ?gnomefish? looks like someone who just saw something incredibly surprising, and didn?t like it. Its huge eyes and not soflattering colors may make you think it wouldn?t be very tasty, but gnomefish actually make a great meal. Anglers mostly fish for them between Florida and the Bahamas, in waters hundreds of feet deep. .....
Payara
20. You know you?re a weird-looking fish if a popular nickname for you is ?vampirefish.? The two long fangs on its lower jaw make it look like one of those fish found in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean, but they are actually native to the Amazon Basin and Orinoco River in Venezuela. Those fangs can grow to be 4-6 inches long, pretty big for a fish that rarely grow much bigger than a foot. What do they use the big teeth for? Well if one of your primary targets is a piranha, another Amazon fish famous for its teeth, youd do thankful to have some long, sharp teeth too. .....
Plecostomus
21. Also called a suckermouth catfish, plecostomus (or pleco for short) are large algae and dead fish eaters native to the tropical freshwaters of Central and South America. They are occasionally seen in the southern U.S., but they are considered a harmful invasive species. The term plecostomus means ?folded mouth,? a fitting name for a fish that literally has a mouth that folds downwards, perfect for sucking down food along the surface of rocks and other structures. They can grow to be a couple feet in length, and are known to be rather territorial. .....
Ocean Sunfish
22. The ocean sunfish (Mola mola) is the heaviest bony fish in the world, with an average weight of 1000 kilograms. The species is native to tropical and temperate waters around the globe. .....
Megamouth Shark
23. This shark is an extremely rare and unusual species of deep water shark. Discovered in 1976, only a few have ever been seen, with 39 specimens known to have been caught or sighted as of 2007 and three recordings on film. Like the basking shark and whale shark, it is a filter feeder, and swims with its enormous mouth wide open, filtering water for plankton and jellyfish. .....
Fangtooth
24. This fish, also called an ogrefish, while understandably named for their disproportionately large, fanglike teeth and unapproachable visage, are actually quite small and harmless to humans: the larger of the two species, the common fangtooth, reaches a maximum length of just 16 centimetres (6 inches); the shortthorn fangooth is about half this size. .....
Pelican Eel
25. The pelican eels most notable feature is its enormous mouth, much larger than its body. The mouth is looselyhinged, and can be opened wide enough to swallow a fish much larger than itself. The pouchlike lower jaw resembles that of a pelican, hence its name. .....
Blue Ringed Octopus
26. The blue-ringed octopus is the size of a golf ball, but its venom is powerful enough to kill humans. There is no known antidote. .....
Grenadiers
27. This large species has a rounded head and a mouth which faces forward to catch squid and fish that swim up off the sea floor. As in most other rattails, the males of this species have a special drum machine on their swim bladder that is used to attract females. .....

Football Fish
31. The species holds pride of place as the first deep-sea angler ever found. The original specimen washed ashore in Greenland in 1833; at 22 inches long, it is still the largest one on record. Since no females of this species have ever been found bearing parasitic males, biologists assume they are fertilized by free-swimming mates. .....
Pacific Blackdragon
32. Female blackdragons are about two feet (61 cm) long and have fanglike teeth and a long chin whisker. The males are small, about three inches (8 cm) in length, and brownish in color. They have no teeth, no chin barbel and no stomach. Unable to eat, the male lives only long enough to mate. .....
Amphipod
33. The unusual animal, called Phronima, an Amphipod, is one of the many strange species recently found on an expedition to a deep-sea mountain range in the North Atlantic. .....
Axolotl
34. Axolotls are like the cute anime pet you never had but always wanted, because you saw it on a deck of Pok?mon cards. Tack onto that the ability to completely regenerate any dangling limb, and youve got yourself a real live Tamigachi! Another cool thing about axolotls is that they stay in their larval state even into adulthood, when they start becoming sexually mature?talk about babies having babies! Maury Povitch would have a field day with these weird sea creatures. Which of course, only makes them weirder. .....
Frilled Shark
35. Its oxymoronic-sounding name alone conjures up visions of a shark from a Disney movie a fluffy, fun little animal that wags its fin like Pluto wags its tail. Well, perhaps that assessment isnt too far off. The frilled shark is not your typical shark, judging by looks alone. It closely resembles an eel so much so that its mistaken for an eel quite often, and the only real distinguishing features are its signature six gill slits (thats like a Hells Angel tattoo for sea creatures). .....
Loch Ness Monster
36. While the Scottish Highlands have a history of having things appear out of the mist (is Brigadoon humor still in, or is 60+ years too much time?), it is the The Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie as weve come to know her, that has become the most popular Scottish Highlands mist dweller. The story goes that in August of 1933, the Courier published an article stating that a man had witnessed what appeared to be a dragon ... or at least, the closest thing he had ever seen to a dragon. Years passed, and evidence proving Nessies existence (including photographs, video and even sonar) mounted. Because of this evidence, The Loch Ness Monster has been neither confirmed nor denied though the scientists in the room may beg to differ. .....
Dana Octopus Squid
37. This weird sea creature mesmerizes its prey by flashing it but not in the whats under that trench coat kind of way. In an actual, literal light gets in youreyes kind of way. By emitting flashes of light used to blind their prey, the Dana Octopus Squid successfully disorients, then captures them. Which begs the question whatever happened to stimulating conversation? .....
Longhorn Cowfish
38. Although the Longhorn Cowfish tends to look like a hovercraft when its moving along, its not quite as fun as the Bumper Car-esque exterior it tends to exude. In fact, what it does exude is a poisonous toxin from the mucous secretions of their skin, rendering their flesh a deadly delicacy (should you be so inclined to eat one, since it has cow in the name and fast food these days will take anything they can get). The good news is, they tend to make a very distinct grunting noise when theyve been captured so just be sure to listen carefully to your next double cheeseburger. .....
Vampire Squid
39. Helping it stay true to its name, the Vampire Squid comes complete with its own cape, made from arms connected by black webbing. The webbing help propel it through the water and almost fly like you guessed it a bat. But by far, the coolest weirdest thing about this sea creature is its ability to hypnotize its prey using whats knowns as photophores on its arms. So basically its a living, breathing dance club. .....
Dragonfish
40. The Deep Sea Dragonfish, or Grammatostomias flagellibarba, is a ferocious predator in spite of its small size. It is one of many species known to inhabit the deep oceans of the world. This fish grows to about six inches in length. It has a large head and mouth equipped with many sharp, fang-like teeth. The dragonfish has a long barbel attached to its chin. This barbel is tipped with a light-producing organ known as a photophore. The dragonfish uses this organ like a fishing lure, flashing it on and off and waving it back and forth. Once an unsuspecting fish gets too close, it is snapped up in the dragonfishs powerful jaws. The dragonfish also has photophores along the sides of its body. These light organs may be used to signal other dragonfish during mating. They may also serve to attract and disorient prey fishes from deep below. The Dragonfish lives in deep ocean waters at depths of up to 5000 feet (1,500 meters). They are found in most tropical regions around the world. .....
Coffinfish
41. The coffinfish (B.melanostomus) has a flabby body and long tail that are both covered with small spines. It has a black mouth lining and an illicium (glossary) on the snout that can be lowered into a groove. This species grows to at least 10cm in length. B.melanostomus has been trawled in the Central to Eastern Indian Ocean at depths ranging from 1320m to 1760m. The name melanostomus comes from the Greek melanos meaning black and stoma meaning mouth. There are two genera in the family Chaunacidae; Bathychaunax and Chaunax. Bathychaunax differs from Chaunax by having a lower lateral line count, longer ilicium, a wider head, more widely spaced body spines and several skeletal characters. .....
