Tips to success in mat exam

What is MAT
1. MAT is a paper-based as well as computer-based test. A candidate can take any one of the two testing formats. .....
Start early
2. Preparing for the GMAT takes time and dedication. Most GMAT test takers start preparing about 3 to 6 months before the actual test date. Using data collected in 2011 from more than 8,000 GMAT test takers, we can see that 49% of test takers spend at least 51 hours prepping for the exam, and those who do better on the GMAT tend to spend more time studying for it. .....
Take it early take it often
3. You saw most of the math covered in the GMAT in high school. Rather than waiting to take the GMAT after you ve graduated college or even well into your working life, it s best to take the test in your sophomore or junior year of college, says Shadna Wise, executive director of graduate programs for the Princeton Review. By taking it earlier, the concepts you learned in high school, which may or may not have been revisited in an intro math class in college, are fresher in your mind and should lead you to a better score than if you are forced to relearn the material. Taking it during your years as an undergraduate is not detrimental, even though many B schools require applicants to have a few years of work experience before applying. Your GMAT scores remain active for five years, so even if you take the test as a junior, you have a three year window after graduating to garner the work experience that schools value before your GMAT score expires. It s smart for someone, knowing the GMAT is going to cover those basic math principles algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics to actually take the GMAT while you re still in school, says Wise. .....
Take economics and statistics in college
4. Some questions on the GMAT will test your knowledge of statistics, which isn t required in some high schools. It s best to take an intro statistics class early in college so that the content is fresh in your mind before taking the GMAT, testing experts say. Also, the GMAT doesn t directly test economics content, but a working familiarity of the subject s basic principles will help you better understand and interpret the business focused content of the test. [Taking an] economics [class] is good because it gives you real life scenarios that you might see in a reading passage, says Wise. Economics helps you take a business perspective when reading a problem, so it helps for [the] verbal [section]. .....
The verbal section matters more than you think
5. While there may be an emphasis on mathematics in many business school classes, precise communication skills are a necessity if you want to be a success in the business world. Not only that, they re much needed if you wish to score high marks on the GMAT. Because the quantitative and verbal scores are lumped together to create the final score, a poor showing on the verbal section can harm your overall score whether you re a math whiz or not. If the student has suffered abysmally in English, they re not going to be able to communicate well in the form of E mails, letters, press releases, says Wise. If you re low in the verbal, your score is going to be lower, period. So, you want to nail it all. .....
Data sufficiency questions require sufficient practice
6. While much of the content covered on the GMAT is similar to that covered on the SAT, ACT, and GRE, and many of the questions are formatted in a similar manner, there is one exception data sufficiency questions. Testing experts say these questions don t exist on other standardized tests and require a significant amount of practice in order to acclimate to their unconventional format. The questions present you with a question and two statements and ask you to determine if either statement answers the question, neither statement answers the question, one statement provides an answer, they answer the question in concert, or they both answer the question independently. At first glance, and without practice, these questions require more time than most and for your mind to work in ways it may not be accustomed. For someone preparing for the GMAT, data sufficiency questions are usually the first enemy that they have, says Andrew Mitchell, director of graduate programs at Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions. They re foreign, and they re tricky, and there are certain traps that people fall into again and again before they re familiar with the question type and before they practice it. .....
Adapt to the computer
7. Like the GRE, the GMAT is a computer adaptive test, meaning that the test is performed entirely on a computer and the questions posed to you changed based on your answers to the previous questions. The better you perform, the harder the questions get. With every correct response, the lowest possible score you can receive increases. Oftentimes, there are also cameras placed on you to ensure that you re not cheating, and there s a timer in front of you, reminding you of how long you have before the section is complete. These factors can make taking the GMAT a harrowing experience, especially the first time. The computer adaptive test is very intimidating, says Ryan Johnston, who scored 700 on the test and will be attending the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business in the fall. They ve got cameras all over you. They re watching to make sure you re not cheating or even chewing gum. You re sitting there looking at the computer screen, and it s very high pressure, very difficult to keep your head focused. .....
The first 10 questions are very important
8. The greatest fluctuations in your score depend on how you fare on the first 10 questions of a given section because of the GMAT s computer adaptive format. It s important to make sure that you take your time on these questions, because they carry the most weight on the test. That doesn t mean, however, that you should spend nearly all of your time perfecting these questions. Just because performing well on them raises your low score floor that doesn t necessarily mean you want to be sitting on that floor when the test is over. Leaving questions blank near the end of the test because you didn t have enough time to answer them can cost you valuable points that will drastically lower your percentile rank. It s best to pace yourself, ensuring that you have time to give each question a thorough look. You re harshly penalized for having questions unanswered, says Mitchell. Oftentimes, people will devote tons of time to the first questions, but then they really fall behind. You ve got to finish strong as well. .....
Keep your eye on the time
9. Careful time management is critical to completing each section of the exam. Once you start the test, an onscreen clock display will count down the remaining time; check the clock periodically to track your progress. If you do not finish in the allotted time, you will still receive scores as long as you have worked on every section. However, your scores will reflect the number of questions answered, and your score will decrease significantly with each unanswered question. .....
Read all test directions carefully
10. This may sound obvious, but you can only answer correctly if you read the directions, which explain exactly what is required to answer each type of question. .....
Read each question carefully and thoroughly
11. Before answering a question, determine exactly what is being asked, then eliminate the wrong answers and select the best choice. If you do not know the correct answer, eliminate choices you know are wrong and select the best of the remaining choices. .....
Keep moving through the test
12. If you are stuck on a question, choose the best answer and move on. .....
Confirm your answer
13. Remember that you cannot change your answers once you move to the next question. This is especially important in the Quantitative and Verbal sections of the GMAT exam, which use computer adaptive testing and select the next question you see based upon your previous responses. .....
Gather information
14. Programmes and keep application deadlines in mind. Register for the GMAT and create a study plan. Dont forget to give yourself enough time to retake the exam if things dont go to plan. .....
Familiarise yourself with the test structure
15. Format, and types of questions you will face and really know the exam. Familiarise yourself with each section, its length and the order of the test, including the timing of the breaks so there are no surprises on test day. .....

Take as many practice tests as you can
21. Ideally under test conditions. Particularly if you are using the Official Guide for GMAT Review or one of our GMAT Paper Tests, try to replicate the test day experience. For example, try a practice test with your copy of the Official Guide for GMAT Review placed upright like a computer monitor and use a sheet of scrap paper rather than writing on the test questions, as you will not be able to do this on test day. .....
Understand the Test
22. The GMAT is not like any other exam. In particular, it doesn t have very much in common with college tests, and there are plenty of important differences between the GMAT and other standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, LSAT, and GRE.
Before you can successfully approach the test, you need to know how the computer adaptive mechanism functions. You need to be familiar with the length of the exam and the range of tested material. In particular, you need to thoroughly understand how Data Sufficiency questions work.
If you don t know how you ll be tested, it doesn t matter how well you know the material. It s like showing up at an event and giving an unrehearsed, impromptu speech while everyone else has practiced their speeches, word for word, for months. .....
Master the Fundamentals
23. The GMAT doesn t explicitly test fundamental knowledge, but if you don t have it, you won t excel on the test. For example, you need to hone your algebra and geometry skills to perfection; you must be able to analyze the structure of an essay; you need to be very familiar with the rules of English grammar. .....
Using Realistic Material
24. First Practice only with realistic material. I can t emphasize this enough. Use the Official Guide. Take the GMATPrep practice tests. If you need more, turn to my sets of practice problems. The average book you take off the shelf at Barnes and Noble just isn t good enough.
Next Practice perfectly. I ve written a longer article about how to do so. In short Do fewer problems, but master them all.
If that means doing some questions over and over again, that s great. You re not finished with a question until you know how to do it, are confident in your approach, and can complete it in the correct amount of time for that question type. .....
This List is Short but Exhaustive
25. If you re spending your GMAT study time doing something that isn t on this list, you re wasting your time. Change your plan so that you are always focused on understanding the test, mastering fundamentals, or practice perfectly using realistic materials. .....
Practice a lot
26. To excel in this exam it is important to practice a lot. One of the most important ways to crack GMAT is take as many mock tests as possible. You can take mock tests from this site. It will also give you the idea that how much time you are taking to solve a particular section. While practicing the mock papers you can also do time management to attempt all the sections of the exam. .....
Attempt fist five questions well
27. The initial few questions in GMAT exam determine the level of question you are going to handle in the exam. Once you attempt the initial few questions the computer will automatically adjust the range of question to fine tune your score. So it is really important that you will give right kind of replies to your first five questions which might prove decisive for your exam. Always cross check your answers before moving to next page and section. .....
Try to complete the exam
28. Always set a goal that you will try to complete all the sections of the exam. If you will fail to complete any section there will be negative marking for that, so make sure that you will attempt all the questions and complete all the sections well. .....
Do not waste time
29. It is always suggested that do not waste time during the exam. If you are unable to solve a particular section or a specific question then move to next segment without wasting much time. It is always good to come back to such questions once you answer all the sections. Do not go back to help page again and again it will consume lots of time. .....
Read all the questions carefully
30. Always read the questions carefully before choosing the right section. In multiple choice questions you will find wrong answer as choice for your answers. Before selecting the right choice make sure that you are selecting the right option. The wrong answers are deliberately designed to mislead the students. .....
Avoid random guessing
31. The pattern of the exam does not allow aspirants to go back to the previous page as you can do in the paper based exam. It is important to answer each question before you move to the next button. It is always suggested to make the educated guess rather than making a random guess even if you lack time. .....
Do Math
32. With computers and calculators all around us, we tend not to do very much math once weve completed our college quantitative requirements, but the GMAT will require you to be able to do math without a calculator so you will need to retrain your mind. Fortunately, day to day life provides countless opportunities to perform simple math by hand or in your head, and the more you can do so the easier a time youll have when you do sit down to do GMAT math. Practice calculating tips when you eat out; estimate how long it will take you to reach your driving destination at two different average speeds; notice prime numbers and multiples of 3 when youre writing down phone numbers; do quick calculations on paper before you plug the numbers into Microsoft Excel. Simply thinking mathematically can help you to retrain those atrophied portions of your brain, and that will allow you to eventually focus more of your study time and energy on GMAT specific question types and strategies. .....
Read
33. The GMAT verbal section is a test of focus and concentration, assessing your ability to process written information on a variety of topics and to do so while tired and distracted. There are certainly techniques to help you navigate the GMAT specific passage formats and question types, and youll learn those when youre ready to buckle down on GMAT study. But in the meantime, you can improve your ability to process that information simply by reading more, and by reading articles and books on topics that arent as natural of choices for you. Traveling this summer? Bring The Economist on the airplane with you and practice some GMAT style reading while you make other passengers think youre smart and worldly. Every other book, as good as it may be, is just commentary. Only the Official Guides contain problems retired from the real GMAT. Thus, your efforts must be centered on the Official Guides. .....
Build up not down
38. We see it all the time whole herds of students go running off to find super hard problems. If I can crack these, the herds think, I can do any GMAT problem. Don t follow the herds. How you do on the GMAT is determined by your floor the level of problem that you can absolutely, positively get right every time, without hesitation or anxiety.

So you should spend more time truly mastering the easier problems. And by mastering, I mean ensuring that you can do the problem, not only correctly, but also quickly, easily and confidently under tough exam conditions as if Dirty Harry were leveling his .44 Magnum at you and asking if you feel lucky. .....

Turn enemies into friends
39. Should you play to your strengths or attack your weaknesses.Ideally, you ll do both. But if you have to choose, especially early on pick the weaknesses.Let s say you re a genius on Critical Reasoning, but you re terrible at Sentence Correction. Which should you work on? The Sentence Correction. Why? Because the test is adaptive. If SC is weighing your performance down, you ll never get the really hard CR problems. You ll never get a chance to prove just how brilliant you are with CR.
So face your demons. Eat your vegetables. You hate geometry? Then do those problems first. Consider them the enemy plans that have fallen into your hands and extract all the intelligence. Then, as you master individual enemy problems, turn them into your friends. Become totally comfortable with them. Then, when you walk into the GMAT, none of the questions will throw you off your game plan. .....
Mix it up
40. You know you should do a lot of topic based work especially in your weak areas. And you know you ll have to take practice tests to prepare for the GMAT s adaptive format, which is both less familiar and more stressful than a paper based format. That s all well and good. But don t limit yourself to topic based work and practice tests. Topic based drills are indispensable, but they give you a crutch you already know what kind of problem you re facing. In contrast, the GMAT throws you problems in random order by content area.So you need to develop your eye your ability to recognize patterns, perceive key traits, classify problems and bring relevant strategies to bear.
In this regard, practice tests would seem to help you here and they do. But you can t, or shouldn t, take a practice test every day. You can burn yourself out all too easily. After every practice exam, you need time to study the detailed game film, draw out lessons and fix the issues. That s several days of work before you take another practice exam. .....
Know what you know
41. It s two weeks to the exam. You ve done a ton of work, and your head is kind of swimming.Stop making your head swim. Start reviewing and redoing problems. At this point, it s much less important to cram new stuff into your brain than it is to organize and strengthen what s already in there.Don t worry about trying to cover everything under the sun. Instead, go for depth over breadth. Force yourself to revisit problems you think you know. You ll be surprised at what you don t really know.
Master a few representative problems from each topic tested on the GMAT. Know everything about these problems. For each one, have a crystal clear approach plan and also a Plan B, C, and even D that you can execute correctly, quickly, easily and confidently while taking enemy fire. Now work those problems again until you ve licked them. You want to walk into the exam with a bunch of friends that is, Official Guide problems that you know cold, inside and out. .....
Discipline is Crucial
42. As with most things in life, inspiration shall get you started for the GMAT Preparation but discipline will keep you going. Unlike the school or college level exams, GMAT is not a test that one ?must take; its a test, generally, for individuals pursuing a certain career and seeks a catalyst for reaching the next level or a means for undergoing a shift in career. Hence, discipline is crucial as one has to stay self motivated for completing the entire preparation effectively. An average student takes around 100 120 days to prepare at around 3 hours per day to reach ones peak score. Any significant gap in preparation extends this duration considerably and affects the likely score one is expected to achieve. Hence, make arrangements for devoting the required hours for long enough and stick to the planned regimen. .....
Have a Study Plan in Place
43. While one can prepare for GMAT on ones own as well, one runs the risk of studying a lot of irrelevant stuff and missing certain crucial stuff. A lot of this has to do with the absence of any one, complete, duly organize study material and the presence of never ending material available in book stores and over the web. The terra bytes of ?free material available only complicates the scenario. Hence, seek a mentor who can suggest the right material to refer to, in the right order, keeping your preparation needs in mind. Dont shy in taking professional help if you feel the need; theres no wisdom in re inventing the wheel. .....
Sit for Long Hours
44. Yes, building stamina for peak concentration for four hours at a stretch is a part of the GMAT Preparation. Dont leave this for the end of your preparation; rather, try to study in long sittings. Have as many four hours sittings as possible. Further, keep taking one test per week in first two quarters of your preparation; in the third quarter, start taking two tests per week and in the last quarter, take two three tests per week. .....
Chase Learning not Scores
45. Dont get too bogged by whether your accuracy improved in the most recent test, what score is the software giving you etc. Rather, concentrate on learning. Mistakes are great friends at practice stage and keep analyzing them thoroughly to learn from your own performances and plug the lacuna. With this approach, the scores, eventually, are bound to follow. .....
Write down unknown prep questions
46. GMAT expects students to learn a wide range of concepts. You can improve this skill by writing down every unknown question. Also note down questions that took a long time for you to answer. Focus on understanding the concept behind these questions and working out the right answer. This is an excellent way to shorten your list of weaknesses during GMAT test preparations. .....

49. In the oral section, if you are not sure about the answer, the best way to handle the situation is through educated guessing. Practice quick ranking of five most probable answers before you strike off the wrong answers. Make a calculated guess out of the rest of the answers. .....
Strive to go beyond your target GMAT score
50. Even if the college you have chosen requires you to score between 500 and 600, aim for 700 and above during GMAT test preparations. This will help you to safely reach your target. On the examination day, it is common for the candidates to score lesser depending on their mental and physical state. .....
Practice taking tests within stipulated time
51. This will help you improve your knowledge and will help you to get a perfect idea about the examination. .....
