Success tips for students

Work to Your Strengths
1. Research has shown that people who use their natural talents and gifts are happier and more successful than people who are trying to overcome a weakness. For example, if you are a math wizard, but hate writing essays, a career in journalism might be a stretch for your skill set. It sounds like a no brainer, but youd be surprised how often students let other people in their life (parents, spouses, friends, family members) unduly influence their career choice. Remember, its your life and youll be the one living with the positive and negative consequences of your decision. Havent identified your strengths yet? Visit the career center at your college for a variety of services at no charge. In addition, visit our Student Success Tools page. .....
Develop a Strong Work Ethic
2. Pursuing a degree is work that will pay off for years to come but, make no mistake, it is work. There will be times when you want to put off an assignment, intentionally turn in less than your best work or maybe even drop out. Make a commitment to yourself to work hard, do your best work and finish what youve started. Successful students persevere especially when they feel like quitting. Everyone has those feelings at one time or another. But successful students find the help they need to get through tough times. You may need to get extra help from your professor or a tutor, or you may need to ask a friend or colleague to be your cheerleader throughout your journey to success. Do what it takes to get the job done. .....
Plan Ahead
3. Dont wait until the last minute to do things (for example, apply for admissions and or financial aid, register for classes, complete your assignments or head out to class). By starting tasks early, you will ensure that you have time to take care of any unforeseen obstacles that might cause delays. If you know that it takes 15 minutes to get to class in good traffic, give yourself an extra 15 minutes in case there is a traffic jam. If you have a major project that counts for two test grades, dont wait until the night before it is due to start. You might have problems finding the information you need; your computer might break or your printer might run out of ink. .....
Make Connections
4. According to the 2009 Community College Survey of Student Engagement, students who have personal relationships with other students, college faculty and employees are more likely to succeed and accomplish their educational goals. Why As mentioned above, there will be times in your college career (and your life) when you feel like giving up. When you do, it helps tremendously to have others around you who care enough to encourage you to persevere and who can offer strategies and alternatives that you may not have known or considered before. The following are some ways you can make connections with others at your college. .....
Take Care of Your Body Mind and Spirit
5. Successful students know that their body, mind and spirit are interconnected. You wont do your best work in college if you have physical, mental or emotional challenges. How do you take care of yourself. .....
Control Their Calendars
6. Successful students dont rely on parents or teachers to tell them when assignments are due or when test dates are approaching. They mark special dates in their calendars and keep track of commitments and schedules.Successful students dont put others in charge of their lives. .....
Successful Students Prioritize
7. Do you like to stay out late with friends Do you like to go to parties Do you like to watch TV or play video games all night Well, who doesnt.Successful students take charge of their lives and balance their time between fun and work. They know that there is a time for all nighters, and its not during finals week. .....
Take Care of Themselves
8. Do you live on junk food and lay on the couch watching TV every night? Students with poor physical habits probably dont feel very energetic in the mornings, and they probably dont feel good sitting in class, either.Good food and a little exercise will clear your head, Students who eat junk in moderation (you really dont have to cut it out completely) and work out in some way are more likely to participate in sports. That means they have more balance in their lives, feel better in the mornings, and are more alert in class. You just have to change a few habits to feel better. Eat healthy foods, start walking more, take a yoga class, enroll in martial arts classes, or challenge yourself to do sit ups at night. Youll notice a change right away. .....
Focus
9. This is the single most important strategy for success in both high school and college (and at work). Focus on what you want, on what you are doing, on where you are at the moment. If you are in college, focus on each and every class and assignment. If you are in Chem I, focus on that class, that assignment, that grade. Dont let your attention be diluted with outside interests until your schoolwork is completed. You wont do well in International Politics if you are fighting with your significant other or worrying about what to wear to the football game this weekend. .....
Prioritize
10. Education is your 1 priority at this time in your life. All decisions must be made around that priority. Sure, it would be fun to spend your time off at the beach, but not if you have to finish a term paper. And it would be fabulous to hang out with your sorority sisters until 4:00 in the morning, but not if you have a final exam on cell mitosis at 9:00 the next day. .....
Sleep
11. Get enough sleep and eat a balanced diet. This isnt advice from Granny; it is a practical, stay healthy and you will do better in school fact. Junk food, binge drinking, doing drugs, and staying up all night do not create a successful scholar. Take care of you. Your success depends on it. .....
Participate
12. o to all classes all the time. Skipping class is the best way to fail. Attend every class and be a part of each one. Ask questions, visit your professors during office hours and discuss class material with other students. Its your education .....
Like all exceptionally great students
13. you must pay attention When a teacher is giving a lesson, take notes and if you dont understand something, raise your hand and ask questions. The more questions you ask, the smarter youll get, believe it or not. By passing notes and talking to friends, you wont learn anything, so pay close attention,. .....
Do your homework
14. Teachers give you homework for a reason. It is to review what you have learned that day. Take advantage of your free time. Do your homework on the way home from school and in any spare time. Unless you have a kind of school that gives you homework for reasonability and not to review. But most schools have it to review. Do as much at school as you can; you have the teacher there in case you need help. Make sure not to rush on your homework, to check over it, and to be neat. If you really want to be a successful student, you should know right from the beginning when you want to be great at anything, and when you have to put up with things that just dont seem fair. Doing your homework is not a big deal. Remember, homework can also help you develop good habits and attitudes. Always do what is asked of you. .....
Be prepared
15. Bring everything you need with you to class. It would be a good idea to bring books, folders, pens, pencils, homework, review sheets and anything else you need. .....
Get organized
16. Staying organized in school is extremely important. If you are organized, then you are one step ahead in being successful. Keep a folder for each subject, that means that you put your math papers in your math folder, your Language Arts papers in your Language Arts folder, your science papers in your science folder, and so on. To make this easier, use color codes or label your folders. .....
Study
17. It is advised to start studying at least a few days before a test. Make a study schedule. If an extracurricular activity gets in the way of your studying, tell the person in charge of that certain event that you will not be able to attend that event, or you will have to leave early. However, there will be certain situations where you will have to attend. In this kind of situation, you will just have to study another day. This is where your study schedule comes in. Write out a schedule of the week of your test and find your free time. Always remember, use your time wisely. Study as if you are motivated for the outcome of your hard work. .....
Start to read a little more
18. If you are not already a reader, start at your level and work your way up. You may not know this, but by reading challenging and difficult books, you can expand your vocabulary. .....
Dont put off work for later
19. Make a daily routine for yourself, it really works. Keep all of your electronics such as your phone, iPod and laptop away from you as these cause distraction. When you come home from school, read through what the teacher had taught in class that day and practice a few math problems to be right on top. .....
Are responsible and active
20. Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibility for their own education, and are active participants in it, Responsibility is the difference between leading and being led. Active classroom participation improves grades without increasing study time. You can sit there, act bored, daydream, or sleep. Or you can actively listen, think, question, and take notes like someone in charge of their learning experience. Either option costs one class period. However, the former method will require a large degree of additional work outside of class to achieve the same degree of learning the latter provides at one sitting. .....
Have educational goals
21. Successful students are motivated by what their goals represent in terms of career aspirations and lifes desires. Ask yourself these questions: What am I doing here Is there some better place I could be What does my presence here mean to me Answers to these questions represent your Hot Buttons and are, without a doubt, the most important factors in your success as a college student. If your educational goals are truly yours, not someone elses, they will motivate a vital and positive academic attitude. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tire of being a student, nothing can stop you; if you arent and dont, everything can, and will. .....
Ask questions
22. Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has at least two other extremely important benefits. The process helps you pay attention to your professor and helps your professor pay attention to you, Think about it. If you want something, go after it. Get the answer now, or fail a question later. There are no foolish questions, only foolish silence. Its your choice. .....
Learn that a student and a professor make a team
23. Most instructors want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade.Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor, they are not an enemy, you share the same interests, the same goals in short, youre teammates. Get to know your professor. Youre the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player. .....
Dont sit in the back
24. Successful students minimize classroom distractions that interfere with learning.Students want the best seat available for their entertainment dollars, but willingly seek the worst seat for their educational dollars. Students who sit in the back cannot possibly be their professors teammate (see no. 4). Why do they expose themselves to the temptations of inactive classroom experiences and distractions of all the people between them and their instructor Of course, we know they chose the back of the classroom because they seek invisibility or anonymity, both of which are antithetical to efficient and effective learning. If you are trying not to be part of the class, why, then, are you wasting your time? Push your hot buttons, is their something else you should be doing with your time. .....
Take good notes
25. Successful students take notes that are understandable and organized, and review them often. Why put something into your notes you dont understand? Ask the questions now that are necessary to make your notes meaningful at some later time. A short review of your notes while the material is still fresh on your mind helps your learn more. The more you learn then, the less youll have to learn later and the less time it will take because you wont have to include some deciphering time, also. The whole purpose of taking notes is to use them, and use them often. The more you use them, the more they improve. .....
Understand that actions affect learning
26. Successful students know their personal behavior affect their feelings and emotions which in turn can affect learning. If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to experience those feelings. Act like youre bored, and youll become bored. Act like youre uninterested, and youll become uninterested. So the next time you have trouble concentrating in the classroom, act like an interested person: lean forward, place your feet flat on the floor, maintain eye contact with the professor, nod occasionally, take notes, and ask questions. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professor may also get more excited and enthusiastic. .....
Talk about what theyre learning
27. Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words.Talking about something, with friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, its a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from short term to long term memory. You really dont know material until you can put it into words. So, next time you study, dont do it silently. Talk about notes, problems, readings, etc. with friends, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, pretend youre teaching your peers. Talk learning produces a whole host of memory traces that result in more learning. .....
Dont cram for exams
28. Successful students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practice it.If there is one thing that study skills specialists agree on, it is that distributed study is better than massed, late night, last ditch efforts known as cramming. Youll learn more, remember more, and earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour a night sessions for Fridays exam than studying for four hours straight on Thursday night. Short, concentrated preparatory efforts are more efficient and rewarding than wasteful, inattentive, last moment marathons. Yet, so many students fail to learn this lesson and end up repeating it over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not too clever, huh. .....
Are good time managers
29. Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have consciously chosen to be in control of their life.An elemental truth: you will either control time or be controlled by it, Its your choice: you can lead or be led, establish control or relinquish control, steer your own course or follow others. Failure to take control of their own time is probably the no. 1 study skills problem for college students. It ultimately causes many students to become non students, Procrastinators are good excuse makers. Dont make academics harder on yourself than it has to be. Stop procrastinating. .....

Tell their friends not to call them during their study times
