Rules to play bull fighting

Bullfight
1. Bull fighting in Spain is an event in which 3 toreros have to fight 2 bulls each and, ultimately, kill them. A bullfight is always held in a roundshape arena or venue called plaza de toros. The toreros perform in order of seniority, which is set according to the date of each toreros alternativa. For obvious reasons, the senior one will participate in the first and fourth fights. Then, the second oldest matador will confront the second and fifth bulls. Finally, the least experienced will fight in third and sixth place. If a matador is gored or injured in any way that prevents him to continue, the senior matador must replace him and complete the fight. .....
History
2. Bullfighting can be traced back to Crete 4,000 years ago where frescos have been found of men and women challenging the beasts. It also found a place in the Roman amphitheatres entertaining the crowds along with the bloodshed of gladiators. But it was Franceso Romero from the town of Ronda in Spain, who, in 1726, lay down the rules of the procedure including the use of estoques sword and muleta small capes. Later, Pedro Romero, the greatest matador of the time was appointed head of the Escuela de Tauromaquia de Sevilla, the first ever bullfighting college. It remains almost unchanged. The matadors still don their traje de luces suit of lights, while a supersticious lot still consider wearing yellow in the bull ring to be unlucky. Only in recent years have women played a part in the bullfight. .....
Styles
3. Originally, at least five distinct regional styles of bullfighting were practised in southwestern Europe: Andalusia, Aragon Navarre, Alentejo, Camargue, Aquitaine. Over time, these have evolved more or less into standardized national forms mentioned below. The classic style of bullfight, in which the bull is killed, is the form practiced in Spain and many Latin American countries. .....
Comic bullfighting
4. Comical spectacles based on bullfighting, called espectculos c micotaurinos or charlotadas, are still popular in Spain and Mexico. Troupes include El empastre or El bombero torero. .....
Encierros
5. An encierro or running of the bulls is an activity related to a bullfighting fiesta. Before the events that are held in the ring, people usually young men run in front of a small group of bulls that have been let loose, on a course of a sectionedoff subset of a towns streets. .....
Toro embolado
6. A toro embolado in Spanish, bou embolat in Catalan, roughly meaning bull with balls, is a festive activity held at night and typical of many towns in Spain mainly in the Valencian Community and Southern Catalonia. Balls of flammable material are attached to a bulls horns. The balls are lit and the bull is set free in the streets at night; participants dodge the bull when it comes close. It can be considered a variant of an encierro correbous in Catalan. This activity is held in a number of Spanish towns during their local festivals. In recent years, animal welfare activists have tried to stop the practice because of cruelty to the animal. .....
Portuguese
7. Most Portuguese bullfights are held in two phases: the spectacle of the cavaleiro, and the pega. In the cavaleiro, a horseman on a Portuguese Lusitano horse specially trained for the fights fights the bull from horseback. The purpose of this fight is to stab three or four bandeiras small javelins into the back of the bull.
In the second stage, called the pega holding, the forcados, a group of eight men, challenge the bull directly without any protection or weapon of defence. The front man provokes the bull into a charge to perform a pega de cara or pega de caras face grab. The front man secures the animals head and is quickly aided by his fellows who surround and secure the animal until he is subdued.Forcados are dressed in a traditional costume of damask or velvet, with long knitted hats as worn by the campinos bull headers from Ribatejo.
The bull is not killed in the ring and, at the end of the corrida, leading oxen are let into the arena and two campinos on foot herd the bull among them back to its pen. The bull is usually killed out of sight of the audience by a professional butcher. It can happen that some bulls, after an exceptional performance, are healed, released to pasture until their end days and used for breeding.
In the Portuguese Azores islands, there is a form of bullfighting called tourada .....
Course camarguaise
8. A more indigenous genre of bullfighting is widely common in the Provence and Languedoc areas, and is known alternately as course libre or course camarguaise. This is a bloodless spectacle for the bulls in which the objective is to snatch a rosette from the head of a young bull. The participants, or raseteurs, begin training in their early teens against young bulls from the Camargue region of Provence before graduating to regular contests held principally in Arles and N mes but also in other Proven?al and Languedoc towns and villages. Before the course, an abrivadoa running of the bulls in the streetstakes place, in which young men compete to outrun the charging bulls. The course itself takes place in a small often portable arena erected in a town square. For a period of about 15 20 minutes, the raseteurs compete to snatch rosettes cocarde tied between the bulls horns. They do not take the rosette with their bare hands but with a clawshaped metal instrument called a raset or crochet hook in their hands, hence their name. Afterwards, the bulls are herded back to their pen by gardians Camarguais cowboys in a bandido, amidst a great deal of ceremony. The stars of these spectacles are the bulls, who get top billing and stand to gain fame and statues in their honor, and lucrative product endorsement contracts. .....
Course landaise
9. Another type of French bullfighting is the course landaise, in which cows are used instead of bulls. This is a competition between teams named cuadrillas, which belong to certain breeding estates. A cuadrilla is made up of a teneur de corde, an entraneur, a sauteur, and six carteurs. The cows are brought to the arena in crates and then taken out in order. The teneur de corde controls the dangling rope attached to the cows horns and the entra neur positions the cow to face and attack the player. The carteurs will try, at the last possible moment, to dodge around the cow and the sauteur will leap over it. Each team aims to complete a set of at least one hundred dodges and eight leaps. This is the main scheme of the classic form, the course landaise formelle. However, different rules may be applied in some competitions. For example, competitions for Coupe Jeannot Lafittau are arranged with cows without ropes.

At one point, it resulted in so many fatalities that the French government tried to ban it, but had to back down in the face of local opposition. The bulls themselves are generally fairly small, much less imposing than the adult bulls employed in the corrida. Nonetheless, the bulls remain dangerous due to their mobility and vertically formed horns. Participants and spectators share the risk; it is not unknown for angry bulls to smash their way through barriers and charge the surrounding crowd of spectators. The course landaise is not seen as a dangerous sport by many, but carteur JeanPierre Rachou died in 2003 when a bulls horn tore his femoral artery. .....

Animal rights
10. Bullfighting is criticized by animal rights activists, referring to it as a cruel or barbaric blood sport, in which the bull suffers severe stress and a slow, torturous death.A number of animal rights or animal welfare activist groups undertake antibullfighting actions in Spain and other countries. According to a poll conducted in Atlanta, U.S., in 2003, 46% of the Americans polled hated or strongly disliked bull fighting. In Spanish, opposition to bullfighting is referred to as antitaurina.Bullfighting guide The Bulletpoint Bullfight warns that bullfighting is not for the squeamish, advising spectators to Be prepared for blood The guide details prolonged and profuse bleeding caused by horsemounted lancers; the charging by the bull of a blindfolded, armored horse who is sometimes doped up, and unaware of the proximity of the bull; the placing of barbed darts by banderilleros; followed by the matadors fatal sword thrust. The guide stresses that these procedures are a normal part of bullfighting and that death is rarely instantaneous. The guide further warns those attending bullfights to Be prepared to witness various failed attempts at killing the animal before it lies down. .....
Funding
11. It has also been noted by critics that bullfighting is financed with public money. In 2007, the Spanish fighting bull breeding industry was allocated 500 million euros in grants, and in 2008 almost 600 million. Some of this money comes from European funds to livestock. Bullfighting supporters argue that almost every single cultural endeavour in Europe is partially financed by public money and few of them generate the kind of revenue and taxes in return that bullfighting does through its impact on businesses like hotels, restaurants, insurances and other industries directly or indirectly linked to the spectacle. In Spain, bullfighting constitutes an estimated 12% of the 15 billion entertainment industry. .....
Modern Style
12. Another current of criticism comes from aficionados themselves, who may despise modern developments such as the defiant style antics for some of El Cordobs or the lifestyle of Jesuln de Ubrique, a common subject of Spanish gossip magazines. .....
Politics
13. Late19thcentury / early20thcentury Findesicle Spanish regeneracionista intellectuals protested against what they called the policy of pan y toros bread and bulls, an analogue of Roman panem et circenses promoted by politicians to keep the populace content in its oppression. During the Franco dictatorship, bullfights were supported by the state as something genuinely Spanish, as the fiesta nacional, so that bullfights became associated with the regime and, for this reason, many thought they would decline after the transition to democracy, but this did not happen. Later socialdemocratic governments, particularly the government of Jos Luis Rodr?guez Zapatero, have generally been more opposed to bullfighting, prohibiting children under 14 from attending and limiting or prohibiting the broadcast of bullfights on national TV. .....
The myth
14. It seems hard to believe that in this socalled civilised age, a most vicious and cruel spectacle of blood continues to flourish in Spain and certain other countries. Bullfighting is barbaric and should have been banned long ago, as bearbaiting was. It is difficult to understand how crowds of people will pay money and take pleasure in watching one lone creature who has never done them any harm getting hacked to death. How can anyone with an ounce of compassion, cheer and chant ol as a banderilla or lance is thrust into the animals painracked body?

Bullfighting has a very glorified public image it is presented as a contest between the brave matador, who boldly risks life and limb to tackle a mad and ferocious beast. The matador is always dressed in a traditional costume of brilliant colours: the bullfight is seen by many as the mysterious ritual between man and beast, which is an integral part of Spanish culture and custom. For this reason, many tourists who visit Spain feel that seeing a bullfight is a necessary part of their holiday, just as tourists visiting Britain go to see the Tower of London.

However, after witnessing the sheer horror of this sickening slaughter, only the most hardened and callous would consider a second visit to the bullring. The purpose of this booklet is to fully explain what the bull has to endure, both during his last hour of life in the ring, and also the other side of the bullfight not commonly known to the vast majority of people: the prebullfight treatment. .....

The prefight treatment
15. The bull is not an aggressive animal, and the reason he is angry and attempts to charge at the matador whilst in the bullring is mainly because he has been horrendously abused for the previous two days. In fact, what spectators see is not a normal, healthy bull, but a weakened, halfblinded and mentally destroyed version, whose chances of harming his tormentors is virtually nil. The bull has wet newspapers stuffed into his ears; vaseline is rubbed into his eyes to blur his vision; cotton is stuffed up his nostrils to cut off his respiration and a needle is stuck into his genitals. Also, a strong caustic solution is rubbed onto his legs which throws him off balance. This also keeps him from lying down on the ground. In addition to this, drugs are administered to pep him up or slow him down, and strong laxatives are added to his feed to further incapacitate him. He is kept in a dark box for a couple of days before he faces the ring: the purpose of this is to disorientate him. When he is let out of the box, he runs desperately towards the light at the end of the tunnel. He thinks that at last his suffering is over and he is being set free instead, he runs into the bullring to face his killers and a jeering mob. .....
The fight
16. Strictly speaking, a bullfight is composed of 3 separate acts, and the whole thing is supposed to last for 20 minutes, though in actual fact it varies. The opening of a bullfight begins with a tune being played on a trumpet the tune is the special, signa lure Rifle which characterises the beginning of the horror. Upon entering the ring, bulls have been known to collapse through exhaustion alter their prefight ordeal they have been dragged to their feet by the bullfighters assistants. .....
The picadors
17. The sequence of events begins when the bull faces the picadors these are the men on horseback, whose purpose it is to exhaust the bull. They cut into his neck muscles with a pica. This is a weapon of about 68 inches long, and 2 inches thick. Once it is thrust into the bull it is twisted round and a large, gaping wound appears. The bull then starts bleeding to death. .....
The assistant matadors
18. After the picador has finished his sordid business, the assistant matadors then get to work with the banderillas sharp, harpoonlike barbed instruments. These are plunged into the bulls body, and he may also be taunted by capes. Up to six banderillas may be used. When the banderillas strike the bull stops in his tracks and bellows madly. .....
The kill
19. A trumpet signals the final act in fact, during the whole nightmare, strange, slow tunes are played throughout. It is, of course, during the final act that the bull is killed and hopefully goes onto a better life. The kill should last 6 minutes, and is done by the main matador. If he has any difficulties which is an extremely rare occurrence, the others immediately rush in to his aid and finish off the bull. .....
The final degradation
20. The matador is supposed to sever the artery near the heart with one thrust of the sword in fact, this never happens. It often takes 23 times before the creature is mercifully released by death. By this time, the bulls lungs and heart will be punctured and he always vomits blood. Miraculously, he sometimes attempts to rise again, and gets up on his knees, only to receive further mutilation at the hands of his tormentors. He finally gives up, goes to his knees and lies down. Even then, he is not allowed a little dignity to leave this world in peace, his ears and tail are cut off often when he is fully conscious, and his broken, bleeding body is dragged around the ring by mules, to which he is attached by an apparatus made of wood and chains. Not content with his suffering, which must be too horrible to describe by words, the crowds boo and jeer him. They even throw empty beer cans at him. His body is then taken away to be skinned, and even then he may not be dead when this happens. .....
Arguments in defence of bullfighting
21. But its part of their culture is the argument commonly used to defend bullfighting, but this argument is also used to defend female circumcision genital mutilation. It could also have been used to defend witchburning, bearbaiting and a multitude of other evils, Culture is not a magic word, and simply labeling something as such doesnt make it right and above criticism. Also, the word culture suggests the enhancement and enrichment of people or a society, and watching animals being tortured to death doesnt fall into this description.

DeathGet your own house in order is another argument put forward, with reference to our own bloodsports such as hunting and harecoursing. Well, there is no reason why we cant support the Spanish Animal Rights movement as well as fighting animal abuse in our own country. An animal doesnt regard itself as being Spanish when it is being tortured to death rather it is a member of the anima[ kingdom being tortured to death by humans. The Animal Rights movement is a worldwide one and should not be restricted by boundaries. .....

Tercio de Muerte
22. In the final stage, the tercio de muerte the third of death, the matador reenters the ring alone with a small red cape, or muleta, and a sword. It is a common misconception that the color red is supposed to anger the bull; the animals are colorblind. The cape is thought to be red to mask the bulls blood, although the color is now a matter of tradition. The matador uses his cape to attract the bull in a series of passes, which serve the dual purpose of wearing the animal down for the kill and creating an interesting display, or faena. He may also demonstrate his domination of the bull by caping and bringing it especially close to his body. The faena refers to the entire performance with the cape muleta.

It is usually broken down into tandas, or series, of passes. The series tanda ends with a final series of passes in which the matador, using the cape, tries to maneuver the bull into a position to stab it between the shoulder blades and through the aorta or heart. The sword is called estoque, and the act of thrusting the sword is called an estocada. During the initial series, while the matador in part is performing for the crowd, he uses a fake sword estoque simulado. This is made of wood or aluminum, making it lighter and much easier to handle. The estoque de verdad real sword is made out of steel. At the end of the tercio de muerte, when the matador has finished his faena, he will change swords to take up the steel one. He performs the estocada and kills the bull with a pierce through the heart, if all goes according to plan. Many times the bull does not get pierced through the heart during the estocada initially, and repeated efforts must be made to bring the bull down and end his life.

If the matador has performed particularly well, the crowd may petition the president by waving white handkerchiefs to award the matador an ear of the bull. If his performance was exceptional, the president will award two ears. In certain more rural rings, the practice includes award of the bulls tail. Very rarely, if the public or the matador believe that the bull has fought extremely bravely, the events president may be petitioned to grant the bull a pardon indulto. If the indulto is granted, the bulls life is spared; it leaves the ring alive and is returned to its home ranch. There the bull becomes a stud for the rest of his life. .....

Bullfighting facts
23. Bulls are in fact colourblind. The decision to use a red muleta cape is now based on the tradition of concealing the bulls blood.Initially more horses were killed in the ring than bulls. Since 1930, horses have worn protective covers to prevent the bulls disembowelling them. The faena, performed by the matador, uses the muleta to creatively allow the bull to charge and narrowly pass by the matadors body. .....
Art or Sport
24. Interestingly only detractors call bullfighting a sport. Traditionalists classify it as an art form claiming there is no competition involved. Even though a number of people have died in the bullring, the lack of competitiveness rings true when you consider that the odds are unfairly stacked against the bull. Petroleum jelly is rubbed into their eyes to create blurred vision and they are shut away in the dark so as to be dazzled by the sunlight in the ring. They are often given laxatives and tranquilisers. In his book .....
End bullfighting
25. It is extremely outdated, barbaric and unspeakably cruel! Put the Matadors into the ring instead, see how much fun they have. They call it bull fighting. No fighting takes place; the bull does not consent to it. They drag the Bulls and smear grease in its eyes, fair fight. .....
