A Boring Family Basement Gets a Modern Makeover
. This family uses their basement for watching movies, playing, and hanging out together. The space satisfied many of these functions, but with its hodgepodge of furniture, beige walls, and random floorplan, it was less than inspiring. With the help of 6th Street Design School, this bland space was transformed to one with patterned wallpaper, bright colors, ample seating, and function specific areas.
The Unbreakable Decor of Kimmy Schmidt
. Ive been watching Netflixs new show The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and I love Kimmys youthful, colorful, and yet tailored style. The show is a visual treat, relying heavily on shades of pink, teal, purple, and yellow. Kimmys clothes and the apartment that she shares with Titus are effervescent, and even Mrs. Voorhees more sophisticated digs are light, modern, and graphic. Here are some colorful products that channel the unbreakable energy and spirit of the show.

The IKEA VITTSJO
. For years IKEAs EXPEDIT has been a ubiquitous storage solution for homes everywhere. But recently the Swedish furnishing giants VITTSJ? has been showing up more and more on my design radar. It doesnt scream IKEA, and youd never guess the system starts as low as $40. The black metal and glass shelving system has a nice industrial quality on its own, but it seems to really shine when its given a bright coat of paint. Here are five really great examples of VITTSJOs potential.

Bryants modest mid
. I live in a 1955 Atomic ranch house, located beneath stately live oaks in balmy Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I bought this 1,160 square foot home just over two and a half years ago and was delighted to see that most of its original character had been left intact blonde brick, oak tile floors, wall of windows, sliding glass kitchen cabinets, phone recess, attic fan, car port, metal rimmed laminate counters, etc.
Modern superhero boys room
. Mallorys 3 boys begged for a room with Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Hulk and a chalkboard. To incorporate all that and still create a cute, charming, handmade room might seem like a tall order, but Mallory nailed it with this colorful and graphic bedroom, perfectly suited to please the whole family.

Paint the Wall
. I love when people display trinkets in their home; vignettes of beloved objects tell stories about their owners history, passions and personalities. An array of objets on a shelf is enough to start a conversation or create a focal point, but if you want to really drive attention to your collection, consider giving it a creative paint job. Its like a real life highlighter for your stuff.
Julians turquoise tapestry room
. Switching from a nursery to a toddler room can be challenging. We moved into our new house when my son was about one year old, crawling and walking like a champ. So it was my chance to make the switch. My usual process is figuring out the main colors first, well this time it was different since I already had a few furniture pieces.
Empty Storefront Gets a Brite Makeover
. Every city has its share of empty storefronts. In Boston, online ticketing platform Eventbrite has turned one such space into a pop up location for 15 events in ten days.
Little Art Lover Inspiration Board for Kids
. Todays On My Shelf inspiration board is influenced by an appreciation for modern art and lovingly handmade toys, which are works of art in and of themselves. Vibrant gold floral wallpaper is the backdrop for a mini gallery wall of abstract, yet playful art prints.
A spring edition inspiration board
. Anyone suffering alongside me during this miserably harsh winter can relate to my desperation for the little signs of Spring. The crocuses are struggling to make their debut, soon to be devoured by our resident garden bunny; the woodland creatures have emerged from their dens. So, in celebration of Spring and Easter, Ive found a perfectly happy, fresh wallpaper by one of my favorite artists, Helen Dardik, to serve as the backdrop for this weeks inspiration board.
Stylish Convertibles Cribs to Toddler Beds
. Almost 5 years ago, when I began planning my son Alexs nursery, I didnt have a great vision of what I wanted his room to be beyond the crib stage. We looked into converting the crib to a toddler bed but it had such an awkward appearance, with very tall head/ footboard, such that it resembled the letter H. It also required the purchase of a conversion kit, so we opted for a full size bed and bypassed the toddler bed altogether. Looking back, I wish Id had the foresight to seek out a more elegant design. Ive selected 8 modern, stylish cribs which convert beautifully and seamlessly into beds. Many of them do not even require the additional purchase of a conversion kit.
How Plycraft Met IKEA and Made a Great Chair Baby
. Sometimes, while thrifting and searching about you come across something amazing, and in perfect condition. This wasnt one of those times. Kelly found this old Eames style Plycraft chair whose leather was nasty, grime covered, torn and faded. There was no way shed harm a hair on the head of a real Herman Miller lounge chair, but this knock off was another story.
A happy modern geometric living room
. We saw lots to like and be inspired by in the rooms of the professional project A Modern And Bright All Over Remodel. So we just had to source some objects that could help craft a similar feel for a living room. We found resources for two nearly identical living rooms one with high end finds and the other with surprisingly affordable options.
Nod to Mod
. Todays style board is a nod to mid century modern. There is something inherently mod about the flamingo motif, which played a big part in the inspiration for this design. The strong focus on simple geometrical pattern, dark woolly textures and walnut finishes is offset by subtle tones of white, ochre and dusty pink.
Chalkboard painted bathrooms
. Since its often the smallest room in the house, the bathroom is a playground for anyone wanting to explore and experiment with different design ideas. Dramatic decor, which can overwhelm a bigger room, somehow manages to work well on such a small scale. My favorite look for bathrooms right now rich and dark chalkboard walls.
A circus inspired nursery
. The inspiration for this nursery came from my personal love for carnivals, circuses, and animals. From the beginning we knew we wanted to keep the sex of our little peanut a surprise, and we wanted a theme that was gender neutral, modern and very colorful, so a circus theme fit perfectly.
. True, the eighties gave us leg warmers, Flashdance, Thriller, crimped hair, questionable fashion, boom boxes, and the destruction of the Berlin Wall but most importantly, it introduced us to NEON.

Andy Warhol in our House Tours
. After I heard of his death this past Sunday, Lou Reed has been on my mind. A Place for Everything and Everyone
. Kelly says, My kids, Bella and Thomas, were having more and more friends over, and they would all cram into the little TV room. I wanted to make the house comfortable for a crowd. They drop beach towels and gym clothes in the rolling laundry bins on their way into the house.
. On most days Kelly has a houseful of teenagers and only two of them are hers. I wanted the kind of house where my kids friends would always come over, she says. Boy, did she get her wish! Kelly had a builder craft three wooden leaves to sit on top of it, expanding the table to seat 18 for Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. They cant get enough of it, says Kelly.

Light colored pillows brighten it up even more, and can easily be switched out or cleaned.
